BRITT J “The Crystal Headed Princess”
2012 StarQuest Finalist

Stars Claiming their Passion and Purpose

This year at the 8th Annual Taste of Soul, Bakewell Media Production will provide the public an opportunity to enjoy a creative combination of raw and seasoned talent as they perform live on the StarQuest Singing Competition Stage. Past and present artist will once again demonstrate why they were selected as finalist as they bring their unique voices to the public stage.

During the 2012 StarQuest Competition we had hundreds of entries but very few finalists. Amongst our list of previous contestants we caught up with two outstanding StarQuest performing artists Rory Darvel and Britt J “The Crystal Headed Princess”. Both independent artists highlight personal moments of progression that have taken place in their careers after the competition and their desire to remain steadfast in pursuit of fulfilling their life’s purpose.
Los Angeles Sentinel:  When did you get your start in the entertainment industry and discover your voice?

Britt J:  I have been performing since the age of four. I was born on Sunset, right where the stars are at Kaiser (laughing). My family loves music. My father plays the piano, my brother is a drummer, my uncle is a bass player and we perform together in a jazz band called IAN, Independent Artist Network. We perform all over California. When I was 16, I was on American Idol and made it pass Hollywood in the year of Fantasia. And I performed at the Dub Show where I opened for Rick Ross, Akon, and David Banner. I also have a hip hop rap group called, The Good Lyfe Bullyz. My music plays in Hollywood and West Hollywood.

LAS:  Since you have performed on major stages in Los Angeles and with independent artist, do you write any of your own materials?

BJ: Yes, I do. I write and perform my own songs.

LAS: How did you find out about StarQuest?

BJ:  My best friend contacted me and told me about StarQuest. It was definitely something I had to do. Since it was in my neighborhood I thought this would be a good opportunity for my community to see what I do and gain there support because I sing live. I went around to the barbershops and salons so they could know who I was. I always wanted to perform at the Taste of Soul. I went to the audition and the experience was amazing!

LAS: Really, what made your audition amazing?

BJ: Okay, you’re not ready…When I auditioned I had a white fur coat on. One of the other contestants that was auditioning spilled coffee on the back of my coat right before they called my name to come on stage. I said, “No this is not happening (any other situation I would have cried hysterically) this is my time and I am not going to let this hold me back.”  When I got on the stage and started singing, I threw my coat off and told myself that this coat is not my issue. I performed at the contest and saw a lot of people from my neighborhood. It felt good because in my neighborhood I have sold like 3,000 of my own CDs. And they supported me.

With the jacket incident, I quickly learned how it important it was to lead by example and demonstrate that things happen but you can’t let it stop you.

LAS: Since the StarQuest competition, where is Britt J now?

BJ:  Since StarQuest, I have done the hit stage play, Under the Freeway. I got interviewed on KJLH and Reach Around Radio. I’ve done performances all over Los Angeles with my Hip Hop group, The Good Lyfe Bullyz and IAN, my jazz band. I have been working on finding new producers. Right now, I have over 200 songs recorded and working hard on building me as a brand. My next project is due out on November 1, 2013 called, My Whole Life in Acapella.  And my song, I Need a Real Man is featured on Does your Momma Know House Mix by DJ Josh Peace.

StarQuest has been an important opportunity for me. I want the people in my community to know that no matter how big your dream is, it can happen. You got to fight for your dream. I bring a lot of different things to the table. I want to open young people’s eyes. StarQuest is a wonderful platform to show people what you can do if you just believe.
